A 58-year-old man was killed in a fatal hit-and-run bicycle accident on the night of December 3 in Gulf Breeze, Florida. The fatal accident occurred on United States Highway 98 near Bergen Road. The 27-year-old driver of the vehicle that allegedly struck the bicyclist has been charged with DUI manslaughter.
The 58-year-old bicyclist was traveling home after finishing his job at a deli in the Pure convenience store. The bicyclist was riding westward on United States Highway 98 and was using the north shoulder of the highway. As the bicyclist was traveling, the 27-year-old driver struck the bicyclist from behind with his 1994 Mazda 929. The bicyclist was killed during the accident. After striking the bicyclist, the driver did not stop and continued driving away from the accident scene.
The 27-year-old driver continued on his way and hit another vehicle on New Hope Road which spun his vehicle into nearby bushes. The driver then abandoned his car and proceeded to run away from the car accident scene. Police were in pursuit of the driver and apprehended the driver about three miles away from the bicycle accident. The 26-year-old driver was charged with two felony charges of west palm beach DUI manslaughter and hit-and-run, two misdemeanor charges of hit-and-run, two traffic offenses and resisting an officer.
The fatal bicycle accident was the area’s second in three months. A 66-year-old bicyclist was hit and killed by a motor vehicle driver in October. The bicyclist was attempting to finish a cross-country bike trip when he was hit in Florida’s panhandle.
